Whenever a disaster or a crisis occurs, there is also a lot of information flowing. Especially on the internet, in new and social media, a lot of reports, rumors, pictures, videos etc. are spreading and often being shared without any attempt of verification.
To prevent the spreading of misinformation, one of the basic principles of HumanityRoad is “Verify X 2” – which means: Only share any message or picture or video if you verified it at least two times. False information can put people at risk. They can e.g. cause panic, lead people the wrong way, hinder or mislead responders and many more.
Today we are happy to announce the release of the Verification Handbook! Authored by leading journalists from the BBC, Storyful, ABC, Digital First Media and other verification experts, the Verification Handbook is a groundbreaking new resource for journalists and aid providers. It provides the tools, techniques and step-by-step guidelines for how to deal with user-generated content (UGC) during emergencies.
And the best: The Handbook is freely available to anyone interested in brushing up their verification skills. While the online was release on January 28th 2014, the print version is planned to be published on February 7th 2014.
