Humanity Road Activity Update Report – July 1-15, 2015

Humanity Road (HR) monitors man-made and natural disaster around the globe. Here is what has been monitored and accomplished within the first 2 weeks of July:

From July 1st to July 15th, Humanity Road volunteers were monitoring:

  • Floods – Philippines
    • At least 40,000 people in 15 villages of Sultan sa Barongis of Maguindanao province have been displaced by flood waters
    • Volunteers searched social media for information to disseminate
    • Tweets were posted using #RescuePH for people needing rescue from flooding and #floodPH to relay information to government about flooded areas
    • Sultan sa Barongis Mayor Ramdatu Angas said the local government has placed the entire town under a state of calamity
  • Wildfires – California
    • HR volunteers monitored wildfires in California including the “Lake Fire” in San Bernadino County
    • The Lake Fire has burned over 30,000 acres
    • Volunteers amplified preparedness information on social media, including messages for people with respiratory problems
    • Posted official twitter accounts to follow, situation updates, and evacuation shelters for pets and livestock.
  • Train Crash/ HAZMAT Incident – Blount County, Tennessee
    • More than 5,000 people in and around Maryville in Blount County, TN were evacuated in the early morning after a freight train car carrying Acrylonitrile, a highly flammable and toxic gas, derailed and caught fire
    • Evacuation area expanded to a 2 mile radius
    • Two dozen people have been taken to the hospital but no serious injuries reported
    • The Blount County Animal Center has taken in several dogs and cats as a result of this emergency.
    • Volunteers conducted data-mining and amplified situational awareness information on social media
  • Tropical Cyclones – Pacific Ocean (Philippines, Taiwan, Okinawa, China)
    • Typhoon Chan-hom: A typhoon the size of Alaska bore down on the Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, and Eastern China
    • HR volunteers amplified any official accounts or sites that might assist the public prepare
    • Typhoon Falcon: Philippines: Schools suspended, domestic flights cancelled
    • Tropical Storm Linfa displaced 56,000 people in southern Guangdong province of China, 300 houses collapsed in Guangdong
    • Typhoon Nangka brought more than 2 feet of rain on the pacific coast of Shikoku, Japan
    • Volunteers shared related informational messages on Twitter and Facebook while monitoring for urgent needs.
