Humanity Road Activity Report: August 2015

Humanity Road (HR) monitors man-made and natural disaster around the globe. Here is what has been monitored and accomplished within the month of August:

From August 1st – August 31st Humanity Road volunteers were monitoring:

  • Typhoon Soudelor – Saipan, Marianna Islands
    • Humanity Road was activated by FEMA through the Tech Corps Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
    • Volunteers searched social media for urgent needs, relief gaps, and private sector updates
    • An activation email was sent out to all HR volunteers, and an SMS was sent to US-based volunteers.
    • The situation report created for FEMA contains information on urgent needs, vulnerable populations, government, schools, pictures/videos, public health & medical, schools, and more.
    • HR produced 6 situation reports published to our website and sent to FEMA, helping with the overall situational awareness.
  • Erawan Shrine Explosion – Bangkok, Thailand
    • An explosion occurred at the Erawan Shrine complex, a popular religious and tourist destination in Bangkok
    • Tweeted list of hospitals, emergency numbers, Embassy announcements, and school closings.
  • Tropical Storm Erika – Dominica, Caribbean
    • Tropical Storm Erika damaged several Caribbean islands, and caused flooding in the Carolina’s (U.S) as well as Florida.
    • The island of Dominica was severely damaged, with the latest death toll at 20 people
    • HR gathered social media info, and re-tweeted important hurricane safety tips.
