Flood India July 2012

Christine Thompson - Tuesday, July 17, 2012
What happened? Situation: As of July 13, 2012        Source: IFRC MDRIN009

Summary: Following heavy monsoon rainfall on 26 June 2012, flooding commenced across many districts of the state of Assam, in the northeast of India. Over the past two weeks, 101 people have lost their lives due to these floods, a large proportion of which were
children. A further 16 people died when caught by a landslide caused by heavy rain. At least 2.2 million people have been affected
by this flooding, which came exceptionally early in the season.

Rainfall: Assam received a 28 percent increase in rainfall (from 1-28 June 2012), 528 mm against the normal rainfall of 413 mm.

Districts Impacted: Since the onset of flooding, there have been 43 reported breaches of embankments on the Brahmaputra and 14 of its tributaries, spread across 14 districts. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries are still flowing above the danger mark, but in most areas, the waters have begun to recede. Though there has been gradual improvement in the flood scenario since 9 July, many areas are still under water and are likely to remain as such for many days.

Relief: The authorities have been distributing relief to those affected, aiming to meet basic food needs. In addition, 150 medical teams, together with 16 National Disaster Response Force Teams have been deployed by the government across 13 of the most severely affected districts.

Red Cross: The Indian Red Cross
Society (IRCS) Assam branch has been working in close cooperation with these authorities.

G2 Geomagnetic Storm

Christine Thompson - Sunday, July 15, 2012
Volunteers have been monitoring solar activity and providing links to the public for official sources.  For the USA the official source for Solar weather is the NOAA National Weather Service Space Weather Prediction Center.  Links for helpful solar information including NOAA can be found on our Solar Weather page.

This week in Solar Weather, a strong X1.5 solar flare occurred with a forecast for minor to moderate geomagnetic storm activity and strong auroras for this weekend.  What does that mean?  You can read NOAA Scales to determine what types of impacts might be observed for various geomagnetic storms.

Researchers rank solar flares according to their x-ray power output. C-flares are the weakest. M-flares are middling-strong. X-flares are the most powerful. Each category has subdivisions: e.g., X1, X2, X3 and so on. A typical X-flare registers X1 or X2.  A great Blog piece written last year shares some helpful information.

What can you do to prepare?  Well most impacts from solar storms are minor.  But here are some helpful tips that are great for anytime disaster threatens;

  1. Get an old fashioned paper map (your GPS might fail)
  2. Unplug delicate electrical devices to prevent surge damage
  3. Check your fire extinguisher, as electrical surges can sometimes cause fires
  4. Get some spare cash for food, gas and incidentals (ATMS could be out)
  5. Top off your gas tank (if power goes out, no way to pump gas)
  6. Write down key phone numbers from your phone
  7. Ensure your generator is ready, and you have fuel in the event of power grid issues
  8. Plan to leave early for destinations as it can disrupt traffic patterns and communications
  9. Exercise patience, be alert for sudden surge or electrical disruptions and be a good neighbor
  10. Discuss your 303 plan with your family.  Where and when would you meet if you lost communications
We also recommend that you
Explore www.ready.gov and prepare your family before disaster.

Virginians should take precautions from the high heat:

  • Keep cool in an air-conditioned area. Spending at least two hours per day in air conditioning significantly reduces the number of heat-related illnesses. Visit malls, local libraries or stay with friends or family who have air conditioning.
  • Cold baths or showers can help cool you down. Also, drink plenty of cool, nonalcoholic fluids, 2-4 glasses each hour, regardless of your level of activity.
  • During extreme temperatures, fans by themselves are not enough to prevent heat-related illnesses. When temperatures are in the upper 90s or above, fans may not prevent heat-related illnesses.
  • Those with immediate need for shelter, food or water should check with local social services departments, count or city governments, or volunteer groups.
