Christine Thompson - Wednesday, April 11, 2012
On April 11, at 5:55pm local time, a 7.0 earthquake struck 32 miles southwest of La Mira in Michoacan, Mexico.  The USGS later downgraded the quake to 6.5.  The quake was reported as 65k  deep and later revised to 20k deep.  La Mira is a heavily populated area of Lazaro Caldenas which is a city near the west coast of Mexico having a population of 75K.  Because of its epicenter being so near to the coast, some people were concerned about a possible tsunami and social media was active with chatter about the event and possibility of a tsunami.  The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center published an alert indicating no threat of a Pacific-Wide Tsunami.  Initial reports from mainstream media indicated that officials in Mexico reported no injuries.  There were reports of some power outages.  Humanity Road volunteers provided helpful information to the public and monitored for urgent needs.  The disaster desk was active for one hour.  Volunteers responding:  Melissa E, Herold C, Cat G, Chris T.
