At 8:38 am UTC (3:38 EST) a M 8.6 earthquake occurred off the west coast of northern Sumatra at a depth of 22 km. All around the Indian Ocean a tsunami watch was issued. Some coastal cities were evacuated in the affected countries.
Immediately Humanity Road volunteers started to monitor the situation.  An event page was created and messages sent out via Twitter and Facebook.  An 8.2 aftershock two hours later caused another / renewed Tsunami watch. In some areas the sea level rose about 1 m. No further damages were reported.  The disaster desk was active for four hours during this event.  Volunteers active: Avi, Chris, Christoph, Yakubu

6.7 earthquake, south of Java, Indonesia

Catherine Graham - Sunday, April 03, 2011

Volunteers responded to a 6.7 earthquake, south of Java, Indonesia. Apr 4 3:06am at epicenter (11m ago, 224km ENE of Christmas Island, depth 10km). http://j.mp/fCJvAu.   The quake was centered closed to Gempa 7,1 SR Guncang Cilacap, Berpotensi Tsunami http://bit.ly/hD1a72.  And there was some confusion on twitter over the tsunami warning.  Tsunami and EQ awareness tweets were released.

<<< #Tsunami Awareness: A strong #quake lasting 20 seconds or more near coast may generate a tsunami http://bit.ly/b43VJQ v @RedCross #hmr[5:06 PM] HR Christoph Dennenmoser:

<<< After #earthquake – Expect aftershocks & stay away from damaged areas. http://bit.ly/9T7IsB #hmrd #indonesia #java[5:34 PM] HR Christoph Dennenmoser:

<<< After #earthquake - Send IMOK to your relatives! #hmrd #indonesia #javaUSGS Logs indicate Only two individuals reported feeling the shaking and another tweet was sent out to notify them where to report if they feel it "Did you feel it shaking? report it to USGS here http://1.usa.gov/hJnEel  #hmrd #earthquake #indonesia #java".

Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said that the quake was 10 kilometres deep with its epicentre 293 kilometres southwest of Cilacap in central Java.  The quake had the potential to cause a tsunami, it said, asking recipients of its public alert SMS to warn other people of the danger.  The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that there was no risk of a widespread destructive wave, but there was a "very small possibility of a local tsunami".  We monitored twitter for urgent needs and found none reported thusfar.  Will continue to monitor for aftershocks.

Volunteers who worked this event:  Avi Sharma, Christoph Dennemoser and Simone Coutinho (who went to twitter jail again - hang in there Taz"
