What should you do if Wildfire is in your area?  Below are tips from the American Red Cross (PDF)
Be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
  • Listen to local radio and television stations for updated emergency information.
  • Always back your car into the garage or park it in an open space facing the direction of escape.
  • Confine pets to one room so that you can find them if you need to evacuate quickly.
  • Arrange for temporary housing at a friend or relative’s home outside the threatened area. Limit exposure to smoke and dust.
  • Listen and watch for air quality reports and health warnings about smoke. Keep indoor air clean by closing windows and doors to prevent outside smoke from getting in.
  • Use the recycle or re-circulate mode on the air conditioner in your home or car. If you do not have air conditioning and it is too hot to stay inside with closed windows, seek shelter elsewhere.
  • When smoke levels are high, do not use anything that burns and adds to indoor air pollution, such as candles, fireplaces and gas stoves. Do not vacuum because it stirs up particles that are already inside your home.
  • If you have asthma or another lung disease, follow your health care provider's advice and seek medical care if your symptoms worsen

Earthquake Monitoring - 6.7 Bolivia and Non Event in California

Catherine Graham - Tuesday, November 22, 2011
Volunteers worked a 6.7 Quake today in Beni Bolivia and investigated a reported event with no magnitude that was later removed from the USGS reporting site.    On the Bolivia earthquake, @Earthquake-Report reports "This earthquake will be felt as a maximum weak shaking in a very vast area of many countries. Not dangerous however.
Reason : very deep in the  hot solid mantle of the earth." The quake was 37 miles SSW of Trinidad, Bolivia.  Investigation showed light activity on the "Did you feel it" USGS site.

In Bolivia, you can reach the police by dialing 110, firemen by dialing 118 and an ambulance by dialing 119.  Trinidad is the capital of Bolivia and has a population of 130k. Bolivia is about the size of Texas and California combined.  The Capital of Bolivia is La Paz.

X24Europe – A Global Disaster Exercise for Social Media

Catherine Graham - Sunday, April 03, 2011

Humanity Road was a partner and participant in X24 Europe, a global social media exercise which was held March 28, - 30th, 2011.  An academics day preceded the event and included guest presentations.  Two volunteers from our organization were guest speakers.  A presentation on Social Media During Disaster was delivered from Cat Graham and a presentation on the Red Cross and Red Cresent Society by Christoph Dennenmoser

Day 1 of the exercise involved a quake and simulated tsunami in the Adriatic Sea causing damage to the Adriatic Basin.  Volunteers were on active duty for 9.5 hours from 1:30 am to 10:00 am eastern.    Day 1 support of the simulation included monitoring twitter, for impacts, locating hospitals, shelters and urgent needs, verifying details and providing guidance to the local population through social media as well as Crowd mapping incidents.  We also identified, verified and geolocated  information on airports in and near the impacted area and inputted that information to the crowdmap. Tweak the Tweet was launched by Kate Starbird to assist in tracking and geolocating tweets.

Volunteers manned the desk on day two of the exercise for phase III and IV of the long term recovery process.  Information and tweets were released for guidance on disease outbreak including guidance from CDC, information on staying hydrated with the recipe for life, and where to find android applications such as "Outbreaks near me”.  Volunteers provided drinking water tips (Sodis method),  emotional care for compassion fatigue on facebook and twitter.  Also, on day two, we reviewed the inbound tweet traffic to posted comments/solutions on the crowdmap.  Below are preliminary statistics on the exercise comparing it from last year’s event in Southern California to Europe event.
