October 2016 Italy Earthquakes

On October 26, 2016, the Humanity Road Disaster Response Team activated its digital disaster desk to monitor social media following impacts to Central Italy caused by magnitude 5.5 and 6.1 earthquakes. Several days later, on October 30, 2016, the region was impacted once again by a magnitude 6.6 earthquake. Although no fatalities occurred in the most recent quake, an estimated 15,000 individuals have been displaced Source. The Civil Protection Agency has been assisting those who have been displaced. Roughly 10,000 people are in temporary shelters (tents and converted sports halls) in Umbria and Marche, 4,000 are in hotels along the Adriatic coast, and many individuals are also staying with family and friends Source and Source 2. Those who have been displaced and have cats and dogs were welcomed in a facility in Piano d’Accio, Teramo Source & Source2.

The HR Italy Twitter Account (@HR_Italian) was activated once again to amplify official information in Italian. Messages included general situation updates, information about relief efforts, and urgent needs. The account was also leveraged following the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that struck Central Italy on August 24, 2016 that resulted in over 290 fatalities in the regions of Umbria, Lazio and Marche Source. @HR_Italian has since received positive feedback from many individuals and associations (see Twitter Accounts of Interest below).  Big thanks to our Italy Response team!

Haiti Hurricane Matthew

Monitoring Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew attained hurricane status on September 29, 2016 and became a Category 5 hurricane on September 30 in the Caribbean Sea.  On October 1, it weakened to a Category 4. Source  It made landfall near Les Anglais, Haiti about 700 AM EDT (1100 UTC) on October 4, 2016. Source  Southern Haiti has effectively been cut off after the bridge linking it to the capital, Port-au-Prince, collapsed.  The deputy mayor of the southern coastal town of Les Cayes described the scene there as “catastrophic”.
