Search and Rescue

There are many heroes who work tirelessly in rescue efforts following a disaster. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation goes out to search and rescue dogs, the four-legged heroes who go where humans cannot, and whose sense of smell and direction saves lives, and finds those victims who did not survive.

Joplin, Missouri Tornado Report

Toni McNulty - Tuesday, May 24, 2011
It is well known that people who love animals consider their pets to be as much a part of their family as their children. On May 22, 2011, when a devastating tornado tore through Joplin, Missouri, many pets were separated from their families. It was reassuring to see, even in the early hours of search and rescue efforts, that people from all over the country were expressing their concern for the animal victims in social media (Facebook and Twitter).

As Joplin continues its search and rescue efforts, we will keep you as informed as possible on the status of Joplin's animals in disaster. Our hearts go out to the tornado victims in Joplin, both human and animal.

The Humane Society of Missouri is deploying a 15-person animal disaster response team at the request of the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency. The team will conduct a search and rescue operation for displaced pets and set up an animal shelter on the campus of Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) in conjunction with Joplin Animal Control. There is at least one veterinarian on this response team, the group reports. In addition, officials are setting up a separate emergency shelter with the capacity to care for several hundred pets if the need arises. Source: DVM360.com.

Animal rescue teams from Wayside Waifs in Kansas City, Spay & Neuter Kansas City and No More Homeless Pets KC and Animal Haven, both in Merriam, showed up to help.

A Facebook page, "Animals Lost & Found from the Joplin, Mo tornado" has been set up to reunite lost pets and families. Volunteers are being asked to foster displaced pets and post pictures of lost and temporarily abandoned animals. Thousands of Facebook members have joined and are reaching out by posting pictures, phone numbers, and donating.

If you have lost or found a pet in Joplin, you also can go to findmyanimal.com and register. They are offering their service for FREE for people of Joplin.
