#Bhopal Hospital Collapse

Paras Nath Sidh activated the disaster desk with a hospital collapse in #Bopal India. Hospital Officials announced the need for blood donations. Volunteers shared information with the public to reduce voice calls, the need for blood as well as information on the status of rescue and recovery. Local TV coverage of the event was broadcast live on http://1tvlive.in/etv-madhya-pradesh-live/ . Paras monitored local events in news and online in language and provided key translation support for the event. The Kasturbha Gandhi hospital, situated in the BHEL township of Bhopal is run by BHEL. The hospital is operated by state-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., Gaur said. Bhopal is about 750 kilometers (465 miles) south of New Delhi. (source)

5.8 Earthquake Myanmar (Burma) - Light shaking

M5.8 earthquake occurred 19.281°N 95.728°E at a depth of 9.7km (6.0mi) This quake occurred 54 km E of Myaydo, Burma in the Province: Magwe. Volunteers responded to monitor social and mainstream media to determine local impacts.

Light traffic was monitored and no discussion of the event other than sharing the earthquake announcement. No immediate news emerged from @myanmarmonitor, Myanmar Red Cross or Myanmar Times http://www.mmtimes.com/ Volunteer Scott Reuter responding performed a search using geofeedia and also multicolumn geosearches and confirmed, no relevant or urgent needs emerging relating to this event. GDACS reports the Landslide risk low (low slope average in the area). No Nuclear plants and no hydroelectric dams in the impact area. Some road or bridge degradation possible. Earthquake-Reporter.com reports that this shallow depth makes this earthquake moderately dangerous. People close to the epicenter will have felt a strong shaking, which can cause moderate damage. USGS expects 4000 people to have felt a very strong shaking. The capital Nay Pyi Taw, felt a weak shaking. USGS Machine generated report stated that overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are highly vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though some resistant structures exist and listed the closest cities to the earthquake were reported as

Mexico and Guatemala Earthquake Activity

Volunteers have been monitoring earthquake activity for the last 24 hours. Strong earthquakes were registered in Guatemala as well as Oaxaca, Mexico and light but increased activity along the California coastline. The following is a report on the quake today in Mexico. Volunteers monitored for impacts and shared advice from officials inside the impact area.

http://earthquake-report.com reported “A strong and shallow M 5.5 earthquake (Ml5.94) hit southern Mexico. USGS gives a depth of only 7.5 km. The epicenter was in southern Oaxaca. Also residents in Mexico-City, 365 km north of the epicenter, felt this quake. The trains were shut down for a few minutes for precaution and then restarted. Severe #WX Ireland and UK

Volunteers monitored severe weather in Ireland today. Issues ranged from flooding in the south and snow in northern Ireland. Volunteers monitored and amplified official sources and tweeted recommendations on who to follow. Cork City Civil Defense provided a video of street flooding taken March 22nd

The Journal reported four feet of flooding in the City of Cork. Dublin and Wicklow were also impacted. A list of weather warnings for Wicklow can be found on http://t.co/d4eqFZUg2r.

Les Pompiers de l’urgence internationale, ONG de secours lors de catastrophes naturelles (USAR-INSARAG) a demandé une assistance sur les Médias sociaux en gestion d’urgence (MSGU) suite au cyclone Haruna à Tuléar, région de Toliara. qu’est ce qu c’est passé? - What Happened	SITUATION GENERALE 2013-03-04 Le bilan général des dégâts de la tempête tropicale "Haruna" est globalement identique que celui de la semaine dernière. Actuellement, les acteurs humanitaires, dans tous les secteurs (habitat, éducation, logistique, sécurité alimentaire et moyen de subsistance, santé, protection, nutrition et wash), sont en phase de réponse et de relèvement précoce. Toutefois, les évaluations multisectorielles se poursuivent parallèlement à ces interventions d'urgences, surtout dans les Fokontany les plus éloignés en raison de l'inaccessibilité durant la période d'inondations. L'Albatros de la Marine Nationale française, en provenance de La Réunion, est arrivé ce matin au port de Toliara. Elle transporte le 35T du fret humanitaire de la PIROI, la réception officielle a été faite en présence d'une délégation dirigée par le Président de la Transition. Les volontaires de la Croix Rouge Malagasy (CRM) assureront la distribution avec les autorités locales. Par ailleurs, les aides reçues lors d'un téléthon national lancé depuis le 27 au 29 février, sont désormais partir dés cette semaine, en direction vers les districts impactés. Jusqu'à ce jour, il a été recueilli une somme de 64 687 970 Ar, 7.5T de riz blanc et d'autres articles composé de matériaux de construction, de médicament, de fourniture scolaire, etc.... COORDINATION NIVEAU NATIONAL: ACF dispose une base à Betioky, il se chargera de la réponse WASH dans cette zone, les restes de leurs NFIs seront partagés à Sakaraha ainsi que le GAP à Tuléar ; La CRS dispose des équipes à Morombe qui sont en mesure de prendre en charge la distribution une fois que NFIs seront arrivés sur place, le PAM est actuellement en train d’organiser l'acheminement, par bateau, des NFIs de Tuléar vers Morombe ; Les Items de la CRM combleront les GAP dans les districts autres que Toliara. EQ Kuril Islands: March blew in with an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.5 that occurred in the Kuril Islands 50.945 degrees N 157.476 degrees E Depth 31.7 Km(19.7 mi). State of Hawaii issued an alert informing that “The actual mag is now 6.7. No Tsunami watches or Warnings issued. Repeat-No Tsunami Warning Issued”. The event was registered as M6.7 - 91km SE of Ozernovskiy, Russia 2013-03-01 13:20:50 UTC. depth 31,7 km, No Tsunami warning, no DART buoys were triggered. This event was monitored by our volunteer Todd who lives in Hawaii. Thanks Todd!

Aransas Pass Fire: Later in the day a large brush fire threatened homes in Aransas Pass. Volunteers were active for approximately 1 hour monitoring social media for urgent needs (isolated individuals, trapped by smoke or fire) No urgent needs were detected. Aransas County TX has no social media presence in Twitter or Facebook. Their website is http://www.aransascountytx.gov and http://www.aransascounty.org/emergencymgmt/ Aransas pass is approximately 51.8 sq mi. with an estimated population of 9,431 in 2010. There was some dialogue in twitter about the fire, mostly regarding the smoke and the evacuation order issued by TX EMA but published by NWSthe alert was hyperlinked to the NWS corpus Christi Facebook Page -

Reporting the following updates: “ Firefighters to residents: Stay out of area and away from emergency vehicles. Threat of danger hasn't cleared yet, they say. Home that was lost was at end of 11th St. At one time at least 50 homes were in direct danger, firefighters say. # of evacuees not yet known. Even with containment people not being let back in yet. AEP stopped power to large area as multiple power lines went down in strong winds. Seventh Street Fire burned in northeasterly direction, all the way to Hwy 35. All of Avenue A was evacuated as a precaution. "US National Weather Service Corpus Christi Texas Per Aransas Pass Fire and PD: Evacuees in Aransas Pass will soon be allowed to return to their homes. Fire crews are still out in the area taking care of hot spots. The fire has been contained and the majority of the fire is now out. What Happened	Feb 28, 2013, 2:30pm Wellington, NZ Exercise Workshop by @mm4marketing at New Zealand Emergency Management conference. "A zombie apocalypse has infiltrated Wellington CBD, New Zealand. Moving slowly but effectively, the zombies are headed north towards SH1 near Johnsonville. CBD residents and businesses are reporting public disorder and looting by panic-stricken people. Traffic is congested exiting the CBD, and there are multiple reports of structural damage to stores on Lambton Quay. The zombies are attacking people in the CBD. It is estimated that over 50% of CBD residents have re-emerged as zombies, and another 20% are injured. This earthquake occurred while we were in a Geomagnetic storm G1 (oddly NOAA doesnt show it) http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ however, reference the below Valentine Storm from spaceweather. The disaster desk was active approximately for one hour.

Meteorite - Russia

Spaceweather Ths morning, a meteor exploded in the daytime skies above Chelyabinsk, Russia. In many of the videos (here and here) you can hear the sound of windows shattering as the meteor's loud shock wave reaches the ground. Nearly 3,000 buildings in Chelyabinsk were damaged to varying extents by the meteor shower, including 34 medical facilities and 361 schools and kindergartens, the city administration’s website reported. The total amount of window glass shattered amounts to 100,000 square meters, the site said, citing city administration head Sergey Davydov. (Source) Current assumptions state that "The trajectory of the Russian meteorite was significantly different than the trajectory of the asteroid 2012 DA14, making it a completely unrelated object. Information is still being collected about the Russian meteorite and analysis is preliminary at this point. In videos of the meteor, it is seen to pass from left to right in front of the rising sun, which means it was traveling from north to south. Asteroid DA14's trajectory is in the opposite direction, from south to north." "Many Russian drivers install and run dashboard cameras constantly to capture evidence in the case of accidents or scams involving pedestrians purposely getting hit. The cameras have long provided a steady stream of YouTube hits, which are now commonly combined into compilations." (Source)

Solar Geomagnetic Storm (Via Spaceweather.com)

Valentine's Day in Scandinavia began with a magnetic storm. Rob Stammes of the Polar Light Center in Lofoten, Norway, reports: "Our instruments recorded 2^o swings in the local magnetic field, which induced strong electrical currents in the ground outside our lab." The needles on his chart recorder were swinging wildly:

"Overhead we saw some fantastic auroras," he adds.

The storm was caused by a region of south-pointing magnetism in the solar wind that wafted past Earth during the early hours of Feb. 14th. The solar wind's south-pointing magnetic field partially canceled Earth's north-pointing magnetic field, opening a crack in our planet's magnetosphere. Solar wind poured in to fuel the storm.

At the time of its closest approach to Earth at approximately 2:25 p.m. EST (11:25 a.m. PST/ 19:25 UTC), the asteroid will be about 17,150 miles (27,600 kilometers) above Earth's surface and measureapproximately 50 meters wide.

What Happened	Severe storms and tornadoes in the early evening of February 10, 2013 impacted the counties of Forrest, Lamar, Lawrence, Marion, Wayne, Warren and Yahoo as well as Hattiesburg, Petal and the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Gov. Bryant declared a state of emergency after storm spotters confirmed that at least one tornado moved through Lamar and Forrest Counties and caused damages in Hattiesburg and on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Injuries were reported but no deaths.Hattiesburg is a city bisected by the county line between Forrest County, where it is the county seat, and Lamar County. Hattieburg’s population was 51,993 in the 2010 census and the city has a total area of 49.7 square miles. Most of Hattiesburg is in Forrest County. A small portion on the west side is in Lamar County. This consists of first, a narrow stretch of land lying east of I-59 and second, of an irregularly-shaped extension into West Hattiesburg. Volunteers tracked emerging events, shared instruction from officials, as well as instructions for pets and animals during tornado. They monitored for urgent needs. Heavy rain and flooding has killed two people and affected some 200,000 in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. The flooding has forced more than 3,000 people from their homes. The floods follow two weeks of record high temperatures.

As cyclone Narelle headed toward Australia's NW coast as a Cat 3, and forecast to become a Cat 4 within 24hrs time, Humanity Road volunteers started monitoring the situation by collecting and spreading useful information. It increased to Cat 4. People along northwest coast of AU were being warned to prepare for dangerous winds. WA's State Emergency Service said the cyclone was not expected to the cross the coast, but could pass close to the communities of Exmouth, Onslow and Coral Bay. Luckily they were right.

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck northern Sumatra 33 km SSW of Reuleuet and 54 km SSE# of Sigli, Indonesia at 7:00am local time on Jan 22nd. At 8:58 UTC (11:58 pm local time) a M 7.5 earthquake struck the Southeastern Alaska region at a depth of 9.9km. (source). The quake struck 106km WSW of Craig, Alaska, population estimated at 1,397. It was first categorized as M 7.7. NOAA issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of Alaska and British Columbia.

A voluntary evacuation was issued for the City of Craig, Alaska and the city opened the elementary school, gym and Craig pool. (source) Alaska Dispatch reported that the water rose about six inches in Port Alexander, Alaska. (source). No further casualties or damages were reported and at 10:58 UTC (1:58 am local time) all tsunami warnings and watches were cancelled.

USGS reported that this M 7.5 earthquake off the west coast of southeastern Alaska occurred as a result of shallow strike-slip faulting on or near the plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates. At the location of this earthquake, the Pacific plate is moving approximately northwestward with respect to the North America plate at a velocity of 51 mm/yr. (source). May 29 12PM Eastern - Residents in western Colombia woke to find their cities and towns covered in volcanic ash Wednesday (May 29) after an area volcano with a deadly past began spewing an ash cloud as high as 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) into the atmosphere. Local authorities raised the alert for Colombia's Nevado del Ruiz volcano from yellow to orange indicating an eruption was likely in the coming days or weeks, though not imminent [ source ]

NHK World Sakurajima volcano in western Japan has erupted with high plumes and rocks spewed more than halfway down the mountain.

Kagoshima City municipal government and a local observatory are urging people not to enter an area 2.4 kilometers from the volcano's crater.

The observatory says an explosive eruption was observed at Showa crater of Mount Sakurajima on Monday afternoon. Rocks were sent flying about 2.4 kilometers down the mountainside. Damage to homes and buildings has not been reported.

It's the first time since March 2009 that large rocks from the volcano have landed near an inhabited area.

The volcano recorded 996 eruptions last year, the largest number ever. Since the start of this year, Mount Sakurajima has already recorded more than 300 eruptions.

When the ashes falling close doors, windows and all ventilation in the house (chimney, heating, air conditioners, etc..) To prevent from entering the home.
Do not stay in open areas, keep children out to play and avoid exercise.
Take special care for people with respiratory problems or elderly.
Avoid going out and if you do to prevent respiratory problems use dust masks can also use towel or tissue moistened with water, and vision with glasses pretéjase type swimmer, use long sleeves will reduce contact with the skin.
If a great amount of ash fall, do not drive to avoid accidents due to poor visibility. If you are caught by the rain of ash in the car. Stay on it with the windows closed.
Wash your eyes, nose and face with homemade saline solution by adding a teaspoon of salt in a liter of boiled water.
Keep covered water tanks and cisterns.
Keep the ashes in contact with food. Wash fruits and vegetables. Do not eat outdoors

Earthquake Magnitude 7.3 off East Coast of Honshu, Japan occurring at 8:18 UTC, December 7, 2012. Volunteers activated and began monitoring a magnitude 7.3 earthquake located 245 km SE of Kamaishi, Japan, at a depth of 36.1 km (22.4 miles).

The USGS reported three subsequent aftershocks with magnitudes of 6.2, 5.5 and 4.7 in the same area. According to BBC NEWS ASIA update at 03:48 Eastern, a Japan earthquake tsunami warning was issued:
"The tsunami warning was issued for the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, which was hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Volunteers monitored official instructions: The US-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat to the wider Pacific Ocean but that a tsunami could be generated that was destructive for local coastlines.

Warnings of the tsunami height varied between 50cm and 2m. Evacuations have been ordered from some of the affected areas. Buildings were reported to have swayed in Tokyo for several minutes."

ABC NEWS online provided live blogging with footage of the earthquake, and additional commentary: “A warning for a one-metre tsunami was issued for the coast of the north-eastern Miyagi prefecture. People were urged to move to higher ground, with a presenter on state broadcaster NHK repeatedly telling viewers to get to safety. "Remember last year's quake and tsunami," he said. "Call on your neighbors and flee to higher ground now."
The quake shook buildings as far away as Tokyo and Shinkansen bullet trains have been suspended between Tokyo and Odawara.

Ishinomaki, a city in Miyagi, reported a tsunami 1 meter (1 yard) high and other towns reported smaller tsunamis.

Volunteers monitored internet activity using twitter search techniques, looking for impacts including reports of damage, injuries and/or fatalities. NHK reported at 18:56 that five people taken to the hospital in Miyagi Prefecture with injuries, none serious, related to the quake. Volunteers also looked for first-hand reports from people who had felt the earthquakes. The initial earthquake was described as lasting 90 seconds.

The tsunami warnings and advisories remained in effect for over an hour. Once they were cancelled, volunteers suspended monitoring at 5:27 AM Eastern time. Desk was active approximately 2 hours

Photos and information emerging from the coastline includes major damage in Cateel. "No structures can serve as evacuation center as all buildings are severely wrecked and damaged including among others churches, hospitals and schools." per president Corazon Malanyaon in an ABSCBN News Video (source) Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman and other officials described scenes of utter devastation with houses and other structures in some towns and villages ripped apart by the most powerful storm to hit the country this year. Victims describe it as the end of the world. It is located 30 minute drive from the site of typhoon Pablo landfall. We all lost our homes, we have not accounted completely all our immediate families. No structures can serve as evacuation center as all buildings are severely wrecked and damaged including among others churches, hospitals and schools. Casualties to date is 56 and is increasing. Injured persons are lying in the streets. Roads going inside the town are un-passable making rescue and relief efforts very hard. People now are starving with no place to go. What Happened	Bopha, the equivalent of a category-five hurricane, grazed the southern islands of the Republic of Palau late Sunday night (12/2/2012) local time, producing wind gusts up to 70 mph at the National Weather Service office in Koror, Palau. Approximately 21,000 live in the Republic of Palau, a group of roughly 300 islands east of the Philippines. According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Bopha's powerful, but rather small (hurricane wind field only somewhat larger than 2004's Hurricane Charley) will make landfall in Mindanao Island Tuesday (12/4/2012), local time, then continue west-northwestward through the central Philippines. Mindanao is the second largest and easternmost island in the Philippines. (Source) The storm gained strength Monday (12/3/2012), becoming a super typhoon with sustained winds greater than 150 mph (240 kph) -- the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center reported. That wind speed is two and a half times the top winds of Severe Tropical Storm Washi, the 2011 system that wiped out entire villages in the same region. That storm was known in the Philippines as Sendong. Dominican Republic – Flood Rescue – Friday October 26, 2012
Humanity Road self-activated for Hurricane Sandy on Wednesday October 24^th monitoring social media streams during the inbound storm for urgent needs. High social media traffic was monitored on Friday October 26th when the storm hit Haiti and the Dominican Republic with winds, surge and large quantities of rain. On Friday October 26^th we were activated to assist people stranded in the Dominican Republic amid rising waters. Trapped in their homes by sudden rising water, they could not reach local emergency services and needed rescue. Cat Graham and Christoph Dennenmoser worked together to notify the Dominican Republic Navy Search and Rescue team who dispatched a ship for rescue. On Monday October 29^th we received confirmation that the 12 people in the home were rescued as well as additional unconfirmed 70+ people in the community.

Throughout the weekend volunteers supported the Tweak the Tweet map launched by Kate Starbird and tested the prototype tweet aggregation tool code named TAP for the project we are working on for the Office of Naval Research SBIR initiative. Based on the prototype tool, Social Media volumes surged on Sunday afternoon and Monday to more than 30,000 tweets per hour as the storm struck New Jersey and New York. Photos and reports of damage were processed into the Tweak the Tweet map by Humanity Road volunteers.

We contacted @NYVOST – and offered surge support, @NYVOST activated Humanity Road to help amplify their official messages in social media and provide surge support as needed. The NYVOST team supports Suffolk County Fire and Rescue Services, NY on Long Island which was heavily impacted . Humanity Road volunteers assisted with surge support reading, amplifying social media messages.

Maryland State Emergency Management – Crisismapping – November 1, 2012
@MDEMA launched a crowdmap to beta test social media situational awareness- Maryland State Emergency Management –activated Humanity Road to assist them with their crisis mapping effort and to help amplify their message. Our priority areas for Maryland were Garret County on the western border and the far eastern shore areas. Cat led this portion of our response and created a spontaneous volunteer signup sheet to recruit volunteers for Media Monitoring impacts in Maryland.

St. Francis De Sales Church and School Rockaways/Belle Harbor –
Community Crisis Communications Command Center , Nov 4-10, 2012

This community has spirit, resilience and a strong leader in Monsignor Brown, who runs Saint Francis de Sales Church and School in Belle Harbor, New York. He placed a call for help when the community was devastated by Hurricane Sandy. As part of the solution team, Alison Thompson (Haiti, Sri Lanka, 9/11) and the Third Wave volunteers reached out to Humanity Road to assist in getting communications and recharging stations in the command center. The school had no functioning phones, power or heat but it was becoming the community hub for local residents to gather, communicate and serve as a collection point for donation management and feeding. As of Sunday November 4^th when we arrived, the shelter finder tool indicated that the nearest Red Cross Shelter was 26 miles away, there was no local presence or connection to the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) for the location, no local presence by FEMA, no VOAD, No CERT team operating and no ESF Cluster. The local community were sheltering in place and spontaneous local volunteer team was doing an outstanding job considering the ground situation. Within 5 minutes of arriving in our rented RV, a resident knocked on the door and asked for first aid treatment for a small head wound. Within the first hours, we were asked to store insulin in the RV refrigerator as it was the only functioning refrigerator in the area and there was no available ice to be found on the island. The community spirit in this parish is amazing and represents in action what FEMA calls “Whole Community”. Many of the local community evacuated, however many found themselves in a position where they couldn’t. These were the firemen, fighting the fires that broke out, the community leadership and a support network to help those found homeless by the hurricane and fires or whose vehicles were destroyed by the salt water surge. Their efforts have been extraordinary. The center was run 100% by local and spontaneous volunteers.

FIXED LOCATION JOAN – COMMUNITY COMMAND CENTER AND RECHARGE AREA

STAGING for the trip: Cat and I left Virginia on Friday November 2^nd to pick up an RV and outfit it with mobile Internet connectivity. We staged the RV in West Chester, PA and equipped it with portable power devices, laptops, Verizon MIFI, recharging devices and other general office equipment. Equipment delivered included; a working portable office with 2 printers, 1 copier, 1 scanner, 3 laptops, charging stations, Verizon MIFI hotspot and self-sufficient power supply served by 1 single 12 volt car battery and inverter. Unexpectedly, the RV was used from Sun Nov 4 through Tue Nov 6 to store insulin – as the only functioning refrigerator in the area and served as temporary housing for local leads and a hub for the onsite leads.

After Sandy, the citizens, residents and the community center had no power, lights, heat, no ability to get gas for the community for generators and now a Nor’easter was approaching them with 60mph winds. Humanity Road was operating on a car battery to supply power to laptops, printers and phone rechargers.

On November 5th, the room lit up with excitement when Goal Zero and Team Rubicon walked in with portable battery packs and lights as well as a battery driven cold chain (refrigerator) to store medicines that needed to be kept cold. Team Rubicon strung the lights and we worked with Goal Zero to set up and train volunteers on using the solar power rechargeable batteries. We tapped Haiti Connect to take lead on putting together a wifi solution team in getting wireless Internet access signal into the building due to significant wireless signal communication issues for wireless voice and data with both AT&T and Verizon Wireless networks. Kudos to Evert Bopp for his much needed assistance in facilitating communications solution. National Guard arrived to provide patrol assistance, as more than 17 miles were without power and vulnerable in the dark during the approaching Nor’easter. With no functioning fixed telecoms in the command center and no feasible way to evacuate or effectively notify those stranded about the incoming storm.

We requested emergency communications options from the National Guard which they provided and a Hummer with radio commnications stood ready during the night of the storm. Thank you National Guard!

Humanity Road provided assistance through Saturday November 10^th in co-leading the command center, JOAN – the Joint online access network provided by Humanity Road staged volunteers to help the community response team in organizing and printing public information flyers and volunteer resources to staff their command center. Monsignor Brown wanted to update his parish and we assisted by uploading a recorded message which they posted to their parish page and Humanity Road shared the video in social media networks.

Animals in Disaster Team’s response to Superstorm Sandy October – November, 2012

While Sandy grew in size and intensity and traveled through the Caribbean, the AiD Team activated on October 25, 2012. We began releasing hurricane preparedness information around the clock via twitter to assist the public in Hurricane Sandy’s projected path. The team also researched and tweeted pet-friendly shelter locations.

The team collated and posted lists of animal shelters/rescue organizations, wildlife rescue organizations, and veterinarians onto Humanity Road’s Sandy blog page. We then reviewed links on the entire page to ensure accuracy of conveyed information.

As the storm worsened in intensity and impacts, we researched and tweeted evacuation orders affecting both people and animals. We conducted ongoing online searches through Google and social media outlets and tweeted animal urgent needs. At the same time, we researched animal shelters/rescue organizations that were damaged during the storm and needed help.

The AiD Team members also supported the HR Urgent Needs cluster in locating and publicizing urgent needs (food, shelter, power, warming stations, etc) for humans. We tweeted donations needs, volunteer needs, and locations where people could get help for themselves and their animals.

At the time of this writing, conditions continue to worsen for many people and their pets; thousands of people in surrounding areas of Long Island alone, are still without power. The Animal in Disaster Team members (Aline Carr, Sylvia Myers, and Cindy Becker) continue to monitor the ongoing situation, and are developing a process to list urgent pet and human needs on the Humanity Road website.

7.7 Seaquake offshore Masset Canada

On Oct 28th at 3:04 UTC an earthquake with a Magnitude of 7.7 occurred at a depth of 17.5 km in the region of Queen Charlotte Islands at the Canadian coast. The 'Did You Feel it' page at USGS showed the quake was felt across 80 zip codes and 74 cities. source

Humanity Road volunteers activated the disaster desk within 10 minutes of the earthquake and started monitoring the situation. No reports about severe injuries or damages and no urgent needs were detected.

A tsunami warning was issued for Canada, Alaska, British Columbia, Washington. About two hours after the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for Hawaii. Huge evacuation efforts took place there. Officials in Hawaii maintained an active presence in social media sharing updates in Twitter and Facebook on evacuation activities.

As of Sunday morning Oct 29th At 2 am local time a tsunami advisory remained in effect. Humanity Road volunteers continued to monitor and amplify messages from local authorities. USGS reported a 6.6 Costa Rica Earthquake 5km NNE of Hojancha, Costa Rica
2012-10-24 00:45:34 UTC. The Disaster desk was activated at 9pm Eastern time within minutes of the earthquake. Traffic was low in social media, no urgent needs, some reports of light damage.

Christoph Dennenmoser reported severe flooding in Nigeria. “Since early July, heavy rains in Nigeria caused severe flooding that displaced thousands of families, destroyed crops and made transporting goods to communities extremely difficult. Most of Nigeria’s 37 states were affected and more than 30 communities completely submerged. The hardest hit communities were in the area around the Niger and Benue Rivers.
